Bosch Building Technologies, a division of Bosch Group, developed an in-house energy platform to analyze energy consumption and pursue ongoing energy efficiency. It built the solution on Microsoft Azure and wanted to continue to expand its capabilities. Bosch created its Connecting Building Services offering and deployed Azure Digital Twins so that it and its customers can build contextually aware solutions and create digital representation of assets, environments, and business systems. Now, customers can apply forecasts and predictive insights to make faster, more informed decisions for improving their buildings’ performance and carbon footprints.

Using Azure Digital Twins to create a digital models

Bosch Building Technologies adopted Azure Digital Twins to create a contextually aware solution and digital models that come to life for Connected Building Services. By incorporating Azure Digital Twins, the company can query data from whole rooms and spaces, rather than disparate sensors, to build digital models of the physical building environment. Bosch uses the digital twin to virtually replicate the physical world, which helps Bosch perform data modeling that supports graph relationships to model interconnected assets, business systems, and the physical environment, providing rich context for data processing and business logic.

Precision data, better decisions

By using Azure Digital Twins, Bosch gains more precise data for a wide range of building technology systems (such as building automation, lighting, and access control) and building types, from offices to healthcare facilities. “A single, integrated digital twin makes it possible to depict how a building’s systems interact with it and each other, something that until recently was only possible for individual systems and only with a laborious manual process,” says Mauer. “We chose Azure Digital Twins because with it, we gain an amazing ability to understand integrated domains.”

When customers see data with that level of precision, they will more fully understand data points, consumption results, context, and how they relate to the physical environment. “We added Azure Digital Twins to give our customers more granular insights into how they’re consuming energy—the usage patterns, the anomalies—so that they can quickly make smart changes in their buildings,” says Mauer.
