Azure Stack Edge brings AI where it’s needed

An especially critical piece is the need for vast amounts of real-time visual analysis powered by AI. To do this, RXR wanted to run it on hardware that was onsite and secure, but also easy to deploy and maintain without breaking the bank.

The key proved to be Azure Cognitive Services coupled with Azure Stack Edge, which comes in different form factors and brings the compute, storage, and intelligence of Azure right to the edge. It’s hardware as a service, managed from the Azure portal for a seamless cloud-to-edge experience. Equipped with hardware accelerators and extra-powerful graphics processing units (GPUs), it uses Azure IoT Edge to run containers that analyze, transform, and filter data without the latency of a round trip to the cloud. But it also has all the capabilities of a network storage gateway, allowing high-speed, secure transfers to and from the cloud, while retaining local access to files.

Intelligent edge meets the intelligent cloud

Azure IoT Hub is the point of entry to the cloud for data coming from the computer vision modules on Azure Stack Edge and the other devices installed in the building. Securely handling authentication and routing, it provides the scale needed to handle the large volume of devices and data streams.

In turn, IoT Hub sends the incoming data to Azure Stream Analytics, a real-time analytics service specifically designed for mission-critical workloads. It analyzes and processes high volumes of fast-streaming data from multiple sources simultaneously, identifying patterns and relationships. These patterns are then used to trigger actions and initiate workflows, such as creating alerts and feeding information to reporting tools.

All of this is done in real time so that building and safety staff can respond quickly.

Core principles: Privacy and ethics

All data is anonymized, and only aggregated data gets stored. For example, the RxWell phone app includes a health questionnaire, mandated by New York State to help screen employees before they enter a workplace. No specific responses are retained in the app or in the cloud, and no questionnaire is ever tied to a specific user. All that gets stored is an anonymous tally of the overall pass/fail rate for an entire building.

The same goes for all sensor data, including that from the real-time computer vision systems. That raw data is kept onsite and processed there. Only the final output is pushed out to the cloud—high-level numbers of occupancy, distancing rates, and mask compliance. As soon as that final output is generated, all of the original raw data and video is purged from the local device.

Even the aggregate data is treated as sensitive, and none of it is shared externally. Meanwhile, the multilayered security controls of Azure help keep it all safe.
